I am an attorney in Phoenix, Arizona practicing at the law firm Carter Law Group, P.C. My practice is 100% devoted to advising nonprofits, tax-exempt organizations and social enterprises. Many of my clients are charitable organizations but I work with the entire spectrum of nonprofit, tax-exempt and duel purpose business structures.

I got my professional start in nonprofit law  because of my late father’s influence. My father started a forward thinking insurance and wealth management firm called Legacy Capital.  He counseled his clients about how to grow their monetary wealth, but at the same time grow their “social capital.”  While I was in college and law school, he would occasionally hire me to translate his ideas into plain language. I needed the extra money but it was his ideas that were the true reward.

Through my father, I learned not only about estate and tax planning, but about philanthropy and the importance of growing one’s social capital. I also learned about the impact that one philanthropic individual can have on the values and priorities of younger generations – values I plan to pass on to my own two children.

I feel blessed to have been able to create a law practice devoted to advising nonprofits, tax-exempt organizations, and social enterprises. I truly enjoy being a member of the community benefit sector and I look for opportunities to leverage my work in ways that strengthen my community as well as the sector as a whole. I hope this blog does just that.
